Explore the fascinating journey of this site, from its illustrious past to its promising future.
A legacy rooted in valour and heritage
Prior to its acquisition in 1917 by the predecessor of the Royal Air Force, the Royal Flying Corps, the site of Kings Meadow housed the estate of a large Victorian villa, Flintfields; it was this villa that initially served as Kenley airfield’s Officers’ Mess. The buildings that are currently referred to as the Officers' Mess were constructed in 1932.
Despite receiving damage during a Luftwaffe bombing raid on 18 August 1940, RAF Kenley resolutely continued its operational use during the Second World War. Serving as one of the key Fighter Command airfields, RAF Kenley played a pivotal role in the defence of the skies over London and the South East, most notably in the intense dogfights of the Battle of Britain during the summer and Autumn of 1940.
Legacy redefined and architectural decline
After its honourable and crucial service, the Officers' Mess experienced a new chapter as the RAF transitioned away from Kenley in the post-war years. Following a dormitory role for the Ministry of Defence, the Officer's Mess closed in 1974, with it later sold to the Department for Trade and Industry who operated the buildings as a radio technology laboratory.
With its historical significance in the defence of the nation and as a prime example of the architectural style employed across many of the RAF stations in the interwar war period, fortunately the RAF Kenley's Officers' Mess was accorded the protection of Grade II listed status in 2001.
Unfortunately, and despite receiving the listed building status, the buildings and site have remained broadly vacant throughout the 21st Century. Sadly, the passage of time over the last two decades has led to a period of decay, with the once-vibrant hub of activity gradually succumbing to the elements. With the original Flintfield House previously demolished in the 1970s, two fires in 2016 and 2019 caused catastrophic damage to the majority of the remain buildings. Anything intact following the fires has subsequently been subjected to significant vandalism and graffiti.
Despite the decay and challenges it has faced, the historical significance of these once grand buildings continue to resonate, displaying the resolute character that they are so fondly remembered for.
